The 69th greatest thing about America is whaaat?

On Friday, CNN published a list of "100 great things about America".

I didn't get very far before noticing something that obviously shouldn't be on the list:

"1. Opportunity
We live in the land of it. It's knocking. And all the other adages -- all true."

The #1 greatest thing about America is the opportunity it offers?

Really?  Does it really offer opportunity?

Listen, there may appear to be many enviable opportunities available in the US.  But appearances can be misleading!

The biggest opportunity the US provides is this:  The chance to become part of a sinking ship!

The United States has been shrinking for decades!  For over thirty seven years, the United States has been selling less than it buys.  Therefore, newcomers to America become part of the sinking ship.  Does that sound like a great opportunity to you?

In fact, judging by the size of the trade deficit, it's possible that the US offers less opportunity than do most countries in the world!

Think of this in another context:  If offered a position, would you consider it a great opportunity to join the ranks of a company in financial distress? Likely not.  People want to join successful companies!

The fact that "opportunity" is #1 on the list is, sadly, reflective of the cluelessness within America that has led America to her knees.

After reading item #1 on the list, I didn't expect that any other items would top that doozy.

I was wrong:

"69. Michelle Obama
A formidable presence who's brought her own form of glam to the White House."

Michelle Obama is the 69th greatest thing about America?  Are you sure the list isn't "the 100 worst things about America?"

During 2008, Michelle said:

"Let me tell you something, for the first time in my adult lifetime I'm really proud of my country".

Boy, I can certainly see how she's the 69th greatest thing about America.  Can't you?

  1. What a gentleman. As an American i totally agree with you about number 1. And probably would on most others. I would also agree lists like this are stupid space takers that nobody pays any attention to. But to take the opportunity to blast not her husband who'd deserve it if he's on the list, but to blast his wife who's done nothing to deserve it and certainly didn't put herself on the list is totally pathetic. You also misquoted her as usual but if that's the only reason you think she belongs let me say that any black person over the age of 40 who has unqualified pride in the United States is either lying or lived in a cave the first 20 or 30 years they were alive. Michelle and those two kids of theirs are the only three things worth saving if it was learned an IBM was heading for DC.
And this is the 74th smartest person in the world? Are you sure it isnt the 74th dumbest person?

  2. Mike,

    you write:

"I would also agree lists like this are stupid space takers that nobody pays any attention to."

Agree with me? I never said that such lists were a waste of time.

    You write:

"...but to blast his wife who's done nothing to deserve it and certainly didn't put herself on the list is totally pathetic. "

So you think that someone in her 40s who says she didn't respect her own country during her entire adult life should make the list of the top 100 greatest things about that country?

    You write:

"You also misquoted her as usual"

As usual? Who else did I misquote? I provided a link to her audio....do you hear any misquote?

    You write:

"...any black person over the age of 40 who has unqualified pride in the United States is either lying or lived in a cave the first 20 or 30 years they were alive."

Michelle didn't say she had qualified pride...she said she had NO pride at all during her adult years.

And it doesn't matter whether it would be normal for her her to have no pride or not...what matters is whether someone with no pride should be considered one of the top 100 greatest things about a country.

Obviously you are the one much closer to being the 74th dumbest person in the world.

The sad part is you don't even know it.
